Hi Jodie,

That's actually a great question. When an employer chooses to perform an official background check on a candidate (for whatever reason) they will reach out to a third party institution. These specialized organizations are able to provide employers with a picture of an individual's character based on past actions and records.

Background checks can reveal information about an individual's professional, financial, criminal, and public history. It’s important to note that the types of information desired really vary from employer to employer. Sometimes it’s as simple as education and banking history and other times it’s much more in-depth and could include everything from speeding tickets to time spent in jail, bankruptcy and employment history.

I hope this helps

What is considered an official background check? Or is this the wrong forum to be asking?

Judy,
You should check out the following blog post that features an interview with one of our Directors on what MA companies are looking for in jobseekers in today's market. Though you are in LA, I'm sure the demand is similar.

Hi Judy,

That was a great idea and makes perfect sense for your creative talents and what you have to offer!

Now I just need to figure out how to apply the same principles and distinguish myself from the herd of HR/Office Management here in Los Angeles applying for the same jobs!

Good article, I think it would also help to do some research on the company as they may be a casual office. But as the articles outlines its always better to be over dressed than under dressed!

My advice would be to walk into an interview with your jacket closed, but feel free to unbutton it when seated. For a more casual company atmosphere, please feel free to read the post about dressing for Business Casual.

Good luck, and continue to check back to the Jobs Blog for weekly advice and posts for job seekers.

Also, check out the Boston Jobs on Twitter! http://twitter.com/jobsBoston
