What Not to Wear: Business Casual

In the summer, many companies relax their dress codes and allow business casual dress on Fridays, or for the entire work week. While business casual dress codes are great because they allow you to be comfortable at your Boston Job, you should not let your appearance become sloppy. You still need to project a polished, professional image for clients and other office visitors, as well as for your coworkers and supervisors.

General Rule: Follow the Example
Notice what the senior executives at your company wear, and follow their example. Generally, khaki slacks like Dockers, nice capris, and dresses and skirts that land no higher than two inches above the knee are acceptable. Sweaters, blouses, jackets, and collared shirts are safe choices for tops. Your clothing should not be torn, wrinkled, or dirty. Jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and revealing tops are not appropriate for the office. Also, leave your beach wear—flip flops, shorts, halter tops, logo t-shirts, and spaghetti straps–at home.

It is all in the Details
Do not overlook your accessories and personal maintenance. Your hair (including facial hair) should be neatly done. Your accessories should not be distracting. Your perfume or cologne should be very subtle.

If your industry is creative, your company’s dress code may be more relaxed. If you are ever in doubt regarding what is and is not appropriate to wear, ask your supervisor or a member of the human resources team for guidance.
