Whether you’re a ’09 college grad, recently laid off, or just looking to change jobs, you can leverage social media to find Boston jobs. Here are a few tips on how to find your next job using social media tools. By joining social networking sites, you extend your online footprint and increase your chances of finding or being found for a job opportunity.
1. LinkedIn
If you join LinkedIn, you can connect with friends, co-workers, and former colleagues. You can also expand your network by joining groups and connecting with professionals your friends know. You’re able to see your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree connections on LinkedIn and can use this information to see how you are connected to professionals at companies you want to work for. Once you discover how you’re connected to someone at a company of interest to you, you can request to be introduced to them.
You can search for jobs on LinkedIn by keyword, country, or postal code. JobsInsider is a tool you can download that will inform you how you are connected to jobs listed on Monster, CareerBuilder, HotJobs, Craigslist, SimplyHired, Dice, and Vault.
2. Use Facebook
Already on Facebook? Great! Have lots of incriminating pictures of yourself and your friends partying? Not so great. Purge your Facebook profile of anything unprofessional and then set your privacy settings to allow potential employers to see your information.
Next, go to your Facebook marketplace, which lists job opportunities, items for sale, and housing for rent. When searching for jobs, you’ll be able to see who listed the opening and then message them to show your interest. You should also join groups and fan pages to connect with people with whom you share interests. Be active in these online communities! Comment on discussion boards, and/or share interesting, pertinent articles or videos.
3. Craigslist
Craigslist is a great job search tool if you’re not looking to work for a big brand company. Small to midsize companies post job opportunities on Craigslist because they can do so for free. You’ll find job postings on this site that you won’t find on job board Web sites like Monster and Career Builder.
4. Tweet Away!
Twitter gives job hunters the opportunity to find and meet potential employers. When you sign up for Twitter, make sure you fill out your profile. If you’re looking for a job, say so in your bio. Next, upload a professional picture of yourself.
When you finish your profile, use twitter search engines like Tweetgrid, Twellow and Twitter Search to find likeminded professionals. Reach out to them. You can engage them in conversation using @reply or re-tweeting their updates.
5. VisualCV (FYI: CV stands for curricula vitae and is another term for résumé)
VisualCV is a Web site that allows you to create a multimedia resume for free. You can bring your resume to life with video, audio, images, informational pop-ups, examples of your work, and references. On the site, you can search for jobs and apply for positions directly using your VisualCV.
