Thank You Notes

Everyone stresses the importance of writing strong cover letters and crafting your resume to address the requirements of each position you are applying for.  But, one crucial step that many job hopefuls forget about is following up an interview with a thank you note. What might seem like an insignificant task can actually significantly affect your chances of landing an offer for a Boston Job in today’s competitive market. Here are some tips for writing an excellent thank you note:

  • Write your note as soon as possible. Many employers are interviewing several people a day; send your thank you note within 48 hours of your meeting to ensure that your interviewer will remember you.
  • Address your reader formally: Dear Mr./Ms. Last name. Formality is a sign of respect.
  • Have an enthusiastic tone.
  • Thank your interviewer for taking the time to speak with you and reference some things you talked about in your meeting. Reminders of what you discussed will trigger your reader’s memory and help your reader connect your name with your face.
  • Briefly re-state your qualifications and your desire to work for the company. Thank you notes provide you the opportunity to re-emphasize why you are a strong candidate for the position and address anything you forgot to discuss in your interview.
  • In a closing sentence, remind your reader that you are awaiting a response. Make sure not to sound too desperate for the job. Desperation is a turn off. Simply state that you are very interested in the position and look forward to hearing from your reader.
  • Don’t type your letter! Write it! Or, if you do send a thank you note via e-mail, send a hand-written one via snail mail too! A hand-written note is preferred because it is more personal and formal.
